Indoor Air Month Is the Perfect Time to Check Your Senior’s Home for Issues

Elderly Care in Mt. Laurel NJ: Indoor Air Month Is the Perfect Time to Check Your Senior's Home for Issues

Elderly Care in Mt. Laurel NJ: Indoor Air Month Is the Perfect Time to Check Your Senior’s Home for Issues

The quality of the air in your senior’s home is directly related to how well she’s able to breathe, so it makes sense to take some time and improve that air quality, if necessary. Here’s what you can do.

Have Air Ducts Checked and Cleaned

The air ducts that run through your senior’s home can collect dust, dirt, and other contaminants that keep the air inside her home from being as easy to breathe as it should be. This is even more complicated if your senior has or has had pets in the past. Before committing to a full air duct cleaning, you can have them checked, which usually involves sending a camera through the ducts to see what’s in there.

Clean Vents and Air Return Registers Regularly

While air duct cleaning usually involves hiring professionals since ducts are not easy to reach on your own, vents and air return registers are much easier to access and to clean. Admittedly, this is usually easier to see if the vents are on the floor or near the baseboards. Consider adding this to a list of tasks that you can delegate out to someone who helps your senior with light housekeeping, such as elderly care providers.

Clean or Replace Filters Regularly

Air filters get dirty much more quickly than you think that they do. By changing or cleaning air filters regularly, you allow them to capture more dust, dirt, and other debris out of the air. Permanent filters often just need a rinse once in a while to stay clean, but disposable paper filters need replacing. This is especially important if your elderly family member has breathing difficulties from COPD or other lung issues.

Consider a Humidifier or Dehumidifier

Depending on your senior’s current indoor air quality and her health needs, she may need a more or less humid environment. Talk with your elderly family member’s doctor about what the optimal humidity reading is for your senior and invest in an inexpensive indoor humidity monitor. These usually operate on battery power and show you the current humidity level and information about the prior day or so. From there, you can either add humidity with a humidifier or remove it with a dehumidifier.

Your senior’s indoor air quality is something to worry about year round, of course, but focusing on it in February for National Care About Your Indoor Air Month gives you a framework to use that enables you to cover all your bases.
